The Padre Serra Invitational
For more than six decades, the Padre Serra Invitational has stood as one of the premier youth basketball tournaments in the region. Established in 1959 under the leadership of Father Max G. Mankowski, S.J., and Jack Andrews, the tournament began as the Catholic Midget League Playoff at Gesu Gym. What started as a small gathering has since grown into one of the longest-running and most respected invitational basketball events in the Midwest.
Today, the Padre Serra Invitational showcases the top 8th grade girls’ and boys’ teams from across the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Each year, the tournament brings together athletes, coaches, families, and communities in a celebration of competition, sportsmanship, and tradition.
Mission and Purpose
The Padre Serra Invitational is more than a basketball tournament—it is a mission-driven event with lasting impact. Organized and staffed by volunteers from the Serra Club of Milwaukee, the tournament reflects the Club’s broader mission: to nurture and support men and women pursuing religious vocations.
Proceeds from admissions, concessions, programs, and merchandise directly benefit candidates for the priesthood and those discerning religious life. Every game played contributes to this greater purpose, ensuring that the tournament’s influence extends far beyond the court.
